    Silver halides are the light sensitive portion of photographic emulsions. Interestingly they are washed away during the development process for color film (excluding K-14 Kodachrome processing of course) but not for B&W film (excluding chromogenic B&W film like Kodak BW400CN obviously because that is developed using color C-41 chemistry).
